Stocking Stuffer Ideas With Well.ca

My favourite thing on Christmas morning as a child was always opening up my Christmas stocking. When I was asked by Well.ca to share my top stocking stuffer picks along with some other Bloggers. I got to relive that excitement while searching their website for my stocking stuffer picks.

I started by searching Well.ca's Holiday Shop and was able to narrow my search down from there. There was so much to choose from, I had a blast picking out what I wanted to fill my own stocking with! I found so many great items that I wanted to add to my stocking so it was tough to narrow it down. Ultimately, I ended up selecting items that I've had my eye on for a while and some others that caught my eye while I was looking around. I really enjoyed perusing their Gift Guide, too, and found it very helpful.

Links to products can be found in the headings (non-affiliate).

1. Briogeo Rosarco Repair On-The-Go Travel Kit

This TSA-approved travel kit contains Briogeo's top sellers. I've tried one product by this brand so far and it worked really well on my colour treated, dry/ damaged hair. So this kit was a no-brainer for me.

2. 100% Pure Ginseng Collagen Boost Mask 5 Pack

I love the brand 100% pure! I've used several of their products in the past and loved them all. I also love masking and anything anti-aging. These Ginseng Collagen boost masks claim to increase collagen production for firmer, more elastic skin. I'll take a year supply, please!

3. Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange Take Me There Set

I already own the solid perfume in this scent from Pacifica. I love that it's natural and cruelty-free. The scent is very refreshing and soothing. This kit contains the roll-on perfume, body butter, and lip tint.

4. Oriwest Meditation Necklace

Aromatherapy on-the-go! I love the idea of these meditation necklaces, where you can add your favourite essential oil to it and breathe it in anytime you need to, whether you need a pick me up or something to help you chill. Such a great gift idea.

5. L'ange Hair Aplatir Flat Iron Blush

I have horribly kinky and frizzy hair that I love to wear sleek and smooth, so I love to try out new hair appliances that might make my life a little bit easier and be less damaging to my hair. This tourmaline-infused ceramic flat iron that boasts 400% more negative ion output than ceramic alone. That means reduced frizz and smooth, shiny looking tresses. This flat iron can also create waves and curls. A great multi-purpose hair tool.

6. Little Blue House Work Sock Women's Stretch Jersey Leggings

I love lounge pants! Anything to keep me comfy and cozy in the winter is right up my alley. These stretch leggings are cute and cozy!

7. The MakeUp Eraser Glove

I've heard so much about these makeup eraser towels and gloves that can apparently wipe away all traces of makeup and dirt without having to use any cleansers. This glove is designed to clean your makeup brushes without any chemicals. Just add water and it claims to remove 100% of makeup. It's reusable up to 1000 washes. This is a super eco-friendly product!

So there you have my top 7 picks for my stocking this year. Let me know what your picks are.

You can check out what the other Bloggers chose for their stockings at www.blog-well.ca.

Tips to Create An Eco-Friendly Home

I love finding new tips on ways that I can make my home more eco-friendly. It's not only good for us and the environment but usually, these tips also help out our pocketbooks.

A tip that I learned years ago is to forgo many conventional cleaning products which can be toxic to the environment and us! They can be endocrine disruptors and create a toxic load on our bodies. Many of today's diseases are caused in part by some of these harmful chemicals in our everyday products. Instead, I use vinegar and baking soda to clean my home. Baking soda and vinegar are both non-toxic and biodegradable and they can be used to clean almost anything in our homes, plus they are budget friendly! Vinegar kills germs and deodorizes and baking soda works as an abrasive agent that also absorbs oils and also deodorizes.

Some of the ways I use vinegar and baking soda:

  • I use a combination of vinegar and water in a spray bottle as my all-purpose cleaner
  • I also use the vinegar and water to spray most fruits and vegetables, especially if they are not organic, then just give them a rinse
  • Baking soda is great to clean more stubborn areas, like the sink, shower, pots and pans.  I often sprinkle some baking soda then spray some vinegar overtop and scrub away using a sponge or towel
  • You can even use this duo for clogged drains

The uses of vinegar and baking soda are almost endless. If you're worried about the scent of the vinegar, there's no need to, the scent dissipates rather quickly. There are many more natural DIY cleaning recipes that can be found online.

I love this graph that Arhaus has created with more easy tips on ways to go green at home. Arhaus is a furniture company that is committed to sustainability and only uses recycled natural resources. Their dining tables are just a few of their products that are made with 100% organic material. Arhaus has also partnered with the American Forest Foundation to help plant more trees in our depleted forests. Arhaus will plant a tree for every purchase during their storewide sale.

Check out this handy infograph with more tips on how you can create a more eco-friendly home.

I'd love to hear your tips on how we can make our homes more eco-friendly.

Sephora Haul November 2017 | Tarte, Benefit, Becca and More!

I don't usually shop at Sephora when it comes to makeup purchases. Maybe for the odd item when I'm looking to purchase something specific. But, when I received a gift card for Sephora recently, I couldn't wait to go ham!

This post is just a haul, if you'd like to see swatches or reviews for any of the items, please let me know in the comments below.

I placed 2 orders with Sephora and neither of them were during the VIB event. I could have received a discount if I had waited a few days but one of the items was on sale for half price, so I was afraid it would sell out (which it did).

I apologize for the grainy photos, I have to get my camera looked at or a replacement.

Order 1:

My first order included Tarte's Clay Play Face Shaping Palette, Becca and Chrissy Teigen's Glow Face Palette and the rest of the items were samples and a 100 point perk.

Tarte's Clay Play palette is all matte and includes 3 bronzer/ contour shades and 9 eyeshadows that can also be used as highlights.

The Becca x Chrissy Teigen glow Face Palette is stunning and I was so excited to get it! I thought it would be the perfect compliment to the all matte Tarte palette above. This contains one bronzer shade, one blush shade, and 2 highlighters. Sadly, the colours didn't work for me and spoiler they accentuated my texture and pores horribly! I returned it. 😞

Samples from this order included an It Cosmetics CC cream, Benefit Brow Powder, Bumble and Bumble Hair Oil, Clinique foundation sample, and 100 point perk: Kate Sommerville Wrinkle Warrior™ 2-in-1 Plumping Moisturizer + Serum.

Order 2:

Next up I ordered Benefit's Rockateur blush which has been on my wishlist for quite some time. I also ordered Tarte's No Shower Happy Hour box set. The bag on the left is a bag of samples (not as impressive as it looks).

I finally caved and got my Benefit Rockateur blush in the full size. Although, when I received it, I had to google it because it looked like a sample size at only 5 grams for $40! 😏 It also came cracked on the upper right-hand corner. It must be a soft blush, here's hoping it doesn't crumble apart. Now, I'm expecting some sort of miracle when I swipe this baby on!

The next item I ordered was this Tarte No Shower Happy Hour box set. It was on sale for $22 from $44. Sure enough, it did sell out, so I'm glad that I didn't wait for the VIB/ Insider sale!

The box includes deluxe sample sizes of:
  • Tarte Hair Goals Dry Shampoo
  • Tarte Queen Clean Vegan Deodorant
  • Tarteguard Tinted Moisturizer in medium
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay blush in Insightful
  • Tartiest Glossy Lip Paint (no colour stated)- spoiler, it's gorgeous!

Samples:

Above is the sample bag and it's contents. I will be giving away the two lip products as I know they will be too dark for me (Sephora Rouge Cream Lipstick in "The Red" and a Tarte Lip Paint). I am most excited about the Marc Jacobs sample eyeliner, I just wish it was brown instead of black, but it was free so I'm not complaining. I'm also curious about the Too Cool For School All-In-One Egg Mellow Cream 5-in-1 Firming Moisturizer. The perfume sample is Marc Jacobs Decadence.

Some more samples included Bumble and Bumble Invisible Hair Oil, Dry Bar 100 Proof Hair Oil, Boscia Tsubaki Oil-Infused Exfoliating Powder, and a 100 point perk of First Aid Beauty's Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer (super excited to try this one!).

I hope you enjoyed seeing my Sephora haul! Did you take advantage of the VIB/Insider sale this year?

Happy weekend, everyone!
xoxo

Empties | Makeup, Skincare, Health, Beauty!

I wasn't able to get this empties post up at the end of October, so this is now a month and a half worth of empties!

I was able to finish up quite a bit of product so I will be brief with my reviews and link to products where possible in the headings.

Skincare

Sibu Beauty Sea Buckthorn Cleansing Face and Body Bar
This cleansing bar is great for troubled skin. It lasts forever so I gave some away as I wouldn't have been able to use them before the expiry date. All natural and Excellent for travel, too!

Repurchase- Yes

NeoStrata Night Repair Cream
For all skin types, lack of radiance. I think I waited too long to begin using this product as I had so much skincare to get through before I was able to get to this product. It was very hydrating yet light and I didn't experience any irritation or breakouts but I feel that the product lost its efficacy.

Repurchase- Not since I discovered Robin McGraw's Revelation line, that's my new holy grail!

Pure + Simple Collagen Elastin Plus
This stuff is pricey but oh so worth it! It's a VERY thin consistency, not much thicker than water, but It's the most hydrating serum that I've ever tried. Fabulous to use all year round but especially important in the winter.. figures that I'd run out now.  Note: I only use this at night because it is so costly.

Repurchase- Yes, but I'll wait for the 50% off sale πŸ˜‰

Nip + Fab Hydrate Dragon's Blood Fix Plumping Serum
I did a full review on several products from this brand (linked here). I used several products from this brand in conjunction and they did wonders clearing up my skin from some existing breakouts that I had from some other skincare that I was testing out prior to this.

Repurchase- Yes! If I experience any breakout issues I will reach for this brand

Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Serum
As above, this product in conjunction with some other Nip + Fab products cleared my skin of some horrible breakouts that I was experiencing. (full review linked here). I find the Nip + Fab products very effective yet they are very affordable.

Repurchase- Yes, especially for breakouts

Robin McGraw Revelation Triple Action Brightening Serum
I have a full review coming on this line. I used this line for a month and my skin changed for the better very quickly. Although I already use great skincare, I had incredible results from this line. I noticed a huge difference, I looked younger overall, and others noticed too as I kept receiving compliments!

Repurchase- YES! If I could afford to get rid of all of my existing skincare and replace it all with this line, I would do so in a heartbeat!

Robin McGraw Revelation Triple Action Brightening Night Cream
I used this along with the serum above. I don't think I've ever experienced such amazing results from any other skincare. I know this line is marketed as brightening but I'd say the biggest changes to my skin were firming. I looked younger overall and the changes came quickly.

These products are dye free, SLS free, paraben free, mineral oil free, and cruelty-free!

Repurchase- YES! As above, I would replace all of my existing skincare with this line if I could afford to!

Makeup

Jordana Quick Shine Topcoat
This product did dry my nails really quickly, however, they also began peeling within a day!

Repurchase- Nope

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light
This product just doesn't work for me. I always end up with the product all over my eye area no matter how careful I am. I prefer Essence Make Me Brow (bonus, it's a lot cheaper). I have a comparison of the two linked here.

Repurchase- No

ELF HD Lifting Concealer in Brightening
This product is very brightening, however, it also gets cakey under my eyes no matter how I apply it. Maybe it's user error or maybe my aging skin... if any of you know how to make this product work without it getting patchy/cakey, please let me know!

Repurchase- No

Maybelline Cover Stick in Medium Beige
This product is so old that I can barely read the label and I have NO idea when I got it. I did manage to finish it up though. It did the job (for my face not my under eyes), the colour is a great match for my skin tone, and it's quick and easy to use. But, I believe there are better products out there these days that I would like to try.

Repurchase- No
Health

Now Foods Eve Superior Women's Multi
This product has many great ingredients for us women. However, this product requires that you take 3 a day to get the nutritional values on the label. I never took more than 1 a day. I should have known better and have gone back to a one a day multi.

Repurchase- No

SBT Seabuckthorn Wellness Matcha
This product is made from Seabuckthorn leaves that are organically grown in the Canadian Prairies. Claims are that recent research has determined that the leaves contain 10 times the heart-healthy flavonols of the berries. I add this to smoothies or make a matcha latte.

From SBT: Our Seabuckthorn Wellness Matcha is a powerful anti-inflammatory that is also caffeine free, packed with protein (24%), and rich in antioxidants, vitamins, & minerals. A recent study has shown that Seabuckthorn leaves contain 10x more flavonols than the Seabuckthorn berry - flavonols are powerful anti-inflammatories that support heart, brain, bone, skin, digestive, & overall health. Its antioxidant properties also aid in preventing oxidative cell damage (aging). Overall Seabuckthorn Wellness Matcha helps to promote heart, skin, mobility, & liver health while increasing energy (naturally & without caffeine), and aiding in weight control.

100% Canadian product (from farm to table) 24% Protein Non GMO, Vegan, Wild crafted & Organic Gluten Free, Soy Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free & Cruelty Free Sustainable ingredients Recyclable packaging Contains 80 grams (almost 100 servings) Caffeine free Boosts energy naturally

Repurchase- Already have

Modern Era Naturals Lipo-Capsulated Vitamin C
This product is much better absorbed than traditional supplements. This product along with other supplements from the same brand did wonders for me when I was going through a bout of vertigo. These products are pricey but really worth it if you can afford it.

From Modern Era Naturals: All of our ultra-absorbable liposomal supplements offer a whopping 90% better absorption rate than traditional supplements.  This means more of the nutrients you need, delivered directly to your cells.  All of our products are gluten-free, allergy-free, vegan, and offer a money-back guarantee.

Repurchase- Yes

BHI ( Heel) Calming Homeopathic Tablets
Claims: For Nervous Tension, Irritability, Sleeplessness. This homeopathic complex has been one of my go-to products for sleep for years now. It's usually the one homeopathic remedy that will work and send me over the edge into sleep when I need it.

Repurchase- Yes

Hyland's Calms Forte Sleep Aid
I've had this for so long and haven't really used it as I prefer the BHI one (above) for my sleep issues. However, this one can be helpful and does have a subtle calming action. I like to take this one occasionally as needed during the daytime.

Repurchase- Possibly

BHI Exhaustion Homeopathic Tablets
Claims: For fatigue, stress, overexertion, stress, insomnia. Unfortunately, this one doesn't work for me. I will stick to the BHI Calming tablets (above) which work much better for me.

Repurchase- No. Looks like it's discontinued anyway. πŸ˜‹

There you have it, another trip through my trash.

I hope you enjoyed reading about what I loved and not so much.

Study Finds Women Suffer From Insomnia Far More Than Men

It's no surprise to me that a polling report released by Calm.com found that women suffer from insomnia much more than men. I have been a long time sufferer of severe and chronic insomnia. I've always found it frustrating that the men in my life fall asleep with ease and even unintentionally, while I struggle to get a few hours a night.

If you also suffer from insomnia, hopefully, this article may shed some light for you or maybe you'll find some of the tips helpful...

Far more women than men suffer insomnia or chronic sleep trouble and middle-aged women suffer most of all according to a just-released international study.

Women are 40% more likely than men to “always” sleep badly.

This figure rises to 55% in middle age (aged 45-54) when the gender gap hits its peak, as does the number of women who report “always” sleeping badly.

By contrast, there is barely any difference in the level of sleep problems among women and men aged 18-24 when both genders are also least likely to report chronic sleep troubles.

This research comes after a survey of 4,279 Britons and Americans was conducted by pollsters YouGov on behalf of the meditation and sleep app Calm.com.

“Our own user data suggest that far more women than men are looking for help getting to sleep,” says Alex Tew, co-founder of Calm, which many users rely on to help them sleep.

While 70% of Calm’s users are women, no less than 85% of listeners to the app’s popular Sleep Stories (or bedtime stories for grown-ups) are female, according to Calm’s own data, compared to just 15% male.

“I certainly see more women with sleep trouble than men,” says Dr Steve Orma, a clinical psychologist and insomnia specialist whose talk on sleep science and advice is one of Calm’s 30+ Sleep Stories.

14% of all female respondents to Calm’s poll report ‘always’ having sleep trouble, compared to just 10% of male.

17% of middle-aged women (aged 45-54) always have such difficulty versus just 11% of men the same age.

40% of women compared to 31% men across all ages have sleep trouble either ‘always’ or ‘often’ 75% of women across all ages sleep badly either ‘always’, ‘often’ or “sometimes’ compared to 63% of men.

There are several possible reasons that so many more women than men sleep badly says Dr. Steve Orma.

“One is hormones – such as estrogen and progesterone – which fluctuate more in women.” Such fluctuations can cause physical discomfort, which in turn can disturb sleep.

Hormonal changes can also cause mood changes and intensity both anxiety and depression says Orma. “All those things can disturb sleep.”

Indeed, for various reasons, women get diagnosed with anxiety and depression about twice as often as men do says Orma. Depression can either increase or decrease the amount someone sleeps, while anxiety tends to disrupt sleep.

Other factors include pregnancy and children.

“Pregnancy involves a lot of discomfort,” says Orma. “You have an increased need to urinate. It can also cause breathing difficulties during sleep, such as sleep apnea.”

Having young children can also often disturb sleep. Newborns are usually bad for both women and men but even nowadays suggests Orma women still tend to take more responsibility for getting up at night and child-raising in general.

Restless leg problem – whether related to pregnancy or not – is also more common in women says Orma. “And that’s something that also disturbs sleep.”

“People in general start sleeping worse when they get older and sleep becomes lighter, particularly in the latter part of the night,” says Orma. “But for women, specifically the menopause and resulting hormonal fluctuations and hot flushes can be another cause of sleep problems.”

Six Reasons That Women Sleep Worse Than Men

• Greater fluctuations in hormones like estrogen and progesterone causing discomfort.
• Anxiety and depression are twice as common for women.
• Pregnancy and the associated discomfort.
• More responsibility for newborns and young children.
• Restless leg syndrome – women get it more.
• The menopause brings more hormone fluctuations, hot flushes.

Psychologist’s Three Top Tips For Women With Insomnia

With women more than men, it’s important to identify any biological factors (such as hormones, pregnancy, menopause, etc) causing insomnia says Dr. Steve Orma, a clinical psychologist, insomnia specialist and author of the book, Stop Worrying & Go To Sleep.

His top tips are:

1. Seek to determine the cause of the sleep trouble: i.e., is it psychological or is there something biological or hormonal going on?
2. Seek treatment based on the specific cause: e.g. CBT-I (cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia) and/or medical treatment for the biological issue.
3. Maintain good sleep habits over time (based on what you learn from CBT-I).

If you've found something that helps you have quality, deep sleep, please share in the comments.

Sweet dreams, Everyone!

Wondering How Old Your Makeup and Other Cosmetics Actually Are!?

If you're like me and like to test out a lot of makeup and beauty items, it's easy to lose track of how long you've had each product. Although, recently I've started to date a lot of my beauty items so I can keep track of them more easily and know when they're expired.

Some beauty products have an expiry date right on them and some do not, but most should have a POA (Period After Opening) date. The PAO date refers to how long a product is good for from the time that it's first opened and is indicated by a picture of an open jar with the number of months the product is good for after opening it. But, in many cases, our beauty items may have been sitting on store shelves for years before they are purchased by us. Brands identify when each product was made by stamping the products with batch or lot numbers.

I recently saw a YouTube video by Jessica Braun, which caught my eye since it was about how old your makeup is. Jessica shared links to some sites in her video that can help us determine when a product was made based on these batch or lot numbers that are stamped onto our beauty products. I had no idea these sites existed and I find them really helpful, so I really wanted to share them with you! So, if you've got some old products sitting around and you can't recall just how old they are, these sites will at least give you an idea of how old they are. Although, the batch numbers indicate when they were made and not when you purchased the items. Products do have a shelf life as well but at least we can get an idea of just how old some of our products are.

If you are someone who purchases a lot of beauty items, you may want to start labelling when you purchase them. I find it very helpful.

Here are two great resources that will help you determine when a product was manufactured based on the batch or lot number on the product:

I'm finding these sites super helpful and I hope you do too!
