Save or Splurge | Benefit Gimme Brow vs. Essence Make Me Brow 01 - Dupe!?

Today's Save or Splurge post is a battle of two eyebrow products. I'll be comparing two tinted eyebrow gels: Benefit's Gimme Brow vs. Essence Make Me Brow.

Let's compare and see whether you should save or splurge!

Price:
Benefit Gimme Brow - $30.00 CAD / 3.0 ml
Essence Make Me Brow - $3.99 CAD / 3.8 ml

Both contenders are tinted brow gels with mascara-like applicators, and both contain fibers for fuller looking eyebrows.

I am comparing both in the lightest colours available; Benefit in 01 Light, and Essence in 01 Blondy Brows.

I was afraid that getting the lightest colours would make my brows an odd colour as my brows are dark. Also, I have blonde hair so I don't want my brows too dark either.

At first glance, both the Essence and Gimme Brow swatch very similarly initially, but once they both dry down, Benefit's becomes darker and cooler (as shown below).

Top: Essence Make Me Brow 01 Blondie Brows
Bottom: Benefit Gimme Brow 01 Light

Benefits wand is shorter and fatter while Essence is more long and narrow. I prefer the wand on the Essence one. I find it easier to apply the product evenly and I feel I have more control.

Benefit Gimme Brow claims "easy mess-proof application." In my experience, I have to disagree with this claim as you will see...

Benefit Gimme Brow 01 Light/ Essence Make Me Brow 01 Blondy Brows

Every time I use Benefit's Gimme Brow, I end up getting at least one clump of the product deposited onto my brow or the skin around my brow, so I have to spend time trying to blend it in or wipe it off. (I'm sure you'll see what I mean in the photos below).

Essence
Essence Make Me Brow - 01 Blondy Brows

In terms of colour, Essence is lighter and looks much more natural looking on my brows, which is the look that I prefer. Benefit's is too dark for my liking, it darkens my brows a little too much, which doesn't suit me nor does it go with my blonde hair.

Above: Benefit on left, Essence on the right
(no other products on my brows)

As you can see in the picture above the Benefit brow on the left has a small clump of product at the front of my brow and another near the arch, they appear as small dark dots. They are easy to remove, but sometimes I don't have time to fuss with my makeup. The Essence brow on the right looks more natural and groomed, with no excess product to remove.

I have been using both products daily for a week and the Benefit one leaves a little clump of product on my eyebrows every time I use it, perhaps it's just not the right shaped wand for my brows. I don't have this issue with the Essence product. Either way, I prefer the colour of the Essence brow gel, it looks more natural on me. I find that bold brows just look too harsh on me. However, some of you may prefer a darker, bolder brow. Now that I've compared the two brands, I'm surprised that Benefit doesn't have a lighter shade in their line.

Similarities:

  • Both dry down completely and don't flake off
  • Both tame the brows and keep them in place
  • Both contain fibers for fuller looking brows
  • There are 3 Shades available in each line

Differences:

  • The wand: Essence is longer and more narrow / Benefit is smaller and fatter
  • The colour: Essence is lighter and warmer / Benefit is darker and cooler
  • Control: Essence gives me more control / Benefit is more difficult to work with
  • The look: Essence is more natural looking / Benefit is bolder and darker
  • Animal Testing: Essence is cruelty-free / Benefit is not cruelty-free
  • Price: There is obviously a HUGE price difference! Essence is almost 10% of the price of Benefit's product. So, if the price is your deciding factor, I'm sure you can make Essence work for you- I heard they just came out with a 3rd shade in their range!

Conclusion:

Save! I prefer the wand on the Essence product which gives me more control and I don't get unwanted clumps of product deposited onto my brows as I do with Benefit's. I find that Essence is easier for me to work with and therefore it saves me time. I find that Benefit's Gimme Brow takes more work and I don't feel as much control with it. I also prefer the colour of the Essence product for my brows as I like a more natural look on me.

If you like really bold brows, you may prefer the Benefit one, or perhaps you could try as darker shade by Essence. The wand is a personal preference as well. If you prefer a shorter fatter wand, you may like Benefit's. If you prefer a flatter more slender wand then you may prefer Essence.

In this case, I choose to "Save" with Essence!

How about you? Have you tried either of these? Which one do you like?

  1. I find Benefit to be too expensive for my liking so have only tried their mascara. I'll stick to my L'Oreal Voluminous Lol Thanks for the comparisons and how essence products turn out! Great review xo

    1. Thanks, Julie! I've never tried Loreal Voluminous mascara but I hear it's great! I'm glad that Essence has come out with a 3rd colour for their brow gel. Thanks for coming by! xo

  2. Great review! I have been using Gimme Brow for a looong time and although I do like it, I agree that it can deposit clumps. In my opinion the essence one suits you way better. For me, I like bolder brows but I'm also a brunette who dyes her hair as close to black as I can get without going black lol

Long story short, you have convinced me to try the essence one! It looks like a great dupe (way cheaper too!)

    1. Thanks, Girl! I think for $30 clumps are unacceptable! Lol. I hope you'll like the Essence one. They just came out with a 3rd shade that's in between the light and dark one they initially had. And hey, more money for clothes! 😊

  5. Wow, that's very interesting to know. Lately I've tried the brow gel from NYX and wasn't happy, so now I know what I should buy next time. Thank you, you save me some $. :)

  8. Oh yeah baby - that Essence one will be PERFECT for me being warmer and lighter. And it's ridiculously affordable too. I admit I'm not very adventurous when it comes to brow products - just about every experiment has been a disaster. But this looks just right - thanks doll!

  10. I've tried both, and much as I like the Essence one, there is absolutely no replacing Gimme Brow for me! It's a Holy Grail product for me, and I think I'm on my sixth or seventh tube!

I love your review, though, and I do have something similar coming up!
