How to Continue Your Chiropractic Results at Home

If you've been dedicatedly showing up to your chiropractor's office, feeling the hard-won results and relief in your body, and have been thinking: 'How can I keep this momentum going at home?', then this article is for you.

With a bit of knowledge and the right technique, you can prolong the benefits of your in-office adjustments. Here are some of the best tips on continuing your chiropractic results at home, ranging from posture tweaks to mindfulness practices!

Beginning Chiropractic Aftercare

After every adjustment, your body needs a little time to understand and get used to the newly achieved alignment. You might feel sensitive, exhausted or even experience a slight discomfort. It is entirely normal!

It's essential not to disrupt the treatment by using muscles that are still tender. A phased return to normal activity allows weakened muscles to strengthen as they adjust to their new positions.

Sustaining Spinal Alignment

Spinal health significantly impacts overall wellbeing. Remaining attentive to spinal alignment while sitting, standing, or moving proves vital. Visualizing a string suspended from one's head to the ceiling while stationary or mobile provides an excellent mental image of proper upright posture - greatly benefiting spinal alignment.

Apps and wearable posture trainers now enable people to monitor spinal positioning throughout the day and provide helpful alerts when slouching occurs. Setting reminders to pause and reset posture throughout lengthy tasks bolsters mindfulness. Even gentle stretches and neck rolls alleviate tension from hunching.

An integrative approach to chiropractic care means supplementing adjustments with complementary wellness techniques like massage, acupuncture, or yoga. These modalities work together to quicken recovery and cultivate robust health.

Maintaining Posture Awareness

Consciousness of one's posture throughout the day strongly influences how long chiropractic results endure. Remaining observant of the body's positioning - whether relaxed on the couch or hunched over a work desk - proves insightful. Brief posture checks enable course corrections of slouching while tools like ergonomic chairs or standing desks offer neck and shoulder support.

Practicing mindfulness meditation enhances self-awareness which translates into improved posture mindfulness even while engrossed in challenging cognitive or physical tasks. This modern device-driven world often compromises posture but conscious corrections mitigate cramping and misalignments.

Importance of Regular Movement

Frequent physical activity crucially maintains wellbeing. Movement lubricates joints, energizes blood flow, enhances flexibility, and strengthens muscles – all contributing to a thriving spine! The spine necessitates movement to uphold its supple function. Small additions like walking or stretching into one’s routine keep it nimble.

Any gentle activity works wonders on spinal health though doctors specifically recommend exercises benefiting core strength, flexibility, and balance like Pilates, swimming, or yoga. Thorough warm-ups and cool-downs bookend workouts helping to keep yourself in shape and prevent injury. Those with limited mobility can perform seated exercises.

Strengthening Exercises

Depending on one's unique needs, chiropractors may recommend targeted strengthening exercises, often focused on the core muscles surrounding the spine to bolster postural support. Consistency remains key when strengthening yet never forcing discomfort. Carefully listening to the body’s responses to these workouts prevents injury.

While core exercises prove foundational, full-body functional movements mimic everyday life in safely building usable strength. Low-weight, high-repetition training suffices over straining with heavy loads. Stretching tense muscles after fortifying them brings the body back into balance.

Ergonomics and Workspace Setup

The environments where one spends considerable time critically affect spinal health. Ergonomically optimized workspace setups that configure equipment like chairs, desks, and screens to match individuals’ proportions assist in maintaining good posture throughout the workday. Investing in ergonomic tools like supportive chairs or keyboards eases neck and shoulder burdens. Even small upgrades generate immense impact over time.

Proper office setup clearly benefits employees but companies implement ergonomic equipment and flexible work-from-home policies also report increased productivity and morale while reducing turnover and absenteeism costs. Schools uniquely position themselves to nurture healthy posture and movement habits in children that will serve them lifelong.

Nutrition and Hydration Importance

Proper nutrition and hydration prove vital to prolonging chiropractic benefits. Healthy eating is one easy way to integrate wellness into your daily life. Balanced diets supply the nutrients necessary for growth and repair while adequate water intake preserves spinal disc and joint health. The recommended daily intake stands at 8-10 glasses to enable optimal bodily functioning.

Anti-inflammatory diets rich in omega fatty acids, leafy greens, and antioxidant-packed fruits and vegetables provide raw materials to heal irritated tissues and reinforce connective structures. Staying properly fueled with nutrient-dense whole foods also powers one through strength and flexibility training critical to spinal health.

Mindfulness and Stress Management

Chronic stress often translates into bodily tension, tightening muscles, and disrupting spinal alignment. Thus, incorporating stress relief techniques like mindfulness meditation retains chiropractic results by calming the nervous system. Even brief daily breathing exercises or meditations drastically decrease anxiety.

Mindfulness directly targets the thought patterns and emotional triggers catalyzing stressful states through non-judgmental awareness cultivated through regular practice. Over time anxious rumination reduces, allowing once tense muscles now poised for misalignment to release.

Sleeping Habits Improvement

Sleeping positions affect conditions such as spinal health. Yet they often go overlooked. Side and back positions better support the spine’s natural curves, especially with contoured pillows elevating the head and knees. Improving sleep ergonomics prevents musculoskeletal pain exacerbation.

Those struggling with discomfort at night may benefit from strategically bolstering pressure points with supportive pillows in side or back sleeping. Stomach sleeping twists the neck and low back excessively over long periods. Establishing cooling, relaxing nighttime routines primes the nervous system for restorative sleep critical to recovery.

Mobility and Flexibility Practices

Upholding joint mobility and flexibility constitutes a key factor in continuing chiropractic benefits at home. Otherwise, rigid, tense muscles emerge, restricting range of motion and causing discomfort. Consistent flexibility exercises via yoga, Pilates, or stretching sustain elasticity. Frequent short sessions prove more valuable than occasional lengthy ones when cultivating lasting flexibility.

Daily movement sessions first actively warm up tissues through light activity then move them through full range of motion to maintain that mobility. Assisting stiff areas with props like yoga blocks or straps helps them regain flexibility at their own pace without causing injury. Cross-training flexibility methods consistently challenge tissues.

Self-Myofascial Release Techniques

Self-myofascial release stretches tight, knotted muscles through movements like foam rolling or massage balls allowing them to regain optimal length and movement following chiropractic adjustments. This self-massage treatment enhances body mechanics and posture when regularly performed.

Myofascial release may produce some discomfort when pressing into tender trigger points but pain should never linger after. It releases bonded muscle fibers improving circulation and lymphatic flow disturbed by scar tissue accumulation over time. Practiced gently, it sustains positive outcomes.

Continuing Routine Check-ups

Continuing routine chiropractic check-ups can aid in maintaining the benefits garnered from initial treatments. Regular check-ins allow for any necessary adjustments or corrections to keep your spine as healthy as possible.

A continual care plan will enable your chiropractor to monitor your progress and make changes if necessary to maintain alignment and promote optimal spinal health.

Closing Thoughts

Maintaining good chiropractic results at home involves holistic consideration of various aspects such as mindful posture awareness, engaging in regular movement, strength training, optimizing workspace ergonomics, staying hydrated, balanced diet intake, stress management practices, and improved sleeping habits along with departmental exercises focused on mobility and flexibility.

Additionally, knowing the role of heat and cold therapy to supplement your chiropractic treatment can prove advantageous. Remember, everyone's body and situation is unique; so always listen to your body, respect its limits, and consult your chiropractor before trying new approaches.

Skincare Tips For Gym Rats

SKIN CARE TIPS FOR GYM RATS

https://www.lakeshoreplasticsurgery.com/about/dr-michael-horn/

While exercise has multiple benefits, very often workouts and great looking skin don't go together.  We turned to Dr. Michael Horn, a Board-Certified Chicago plastic surgeon and anti-aging expert, to give tips on how you can get the six-pack and still have glowing, acne free skin.

Sweat Itself Does Not Cause Acne

First, "It is important to know that sweat itself does not cause acne," says Dr. Horn. He explains, "Professional sportsmen are predisposed to accumulating dirt and bacteria in their pores during and after workout periods. If left without proper cleansing this can cause worsening in skin conditions like acne and dermatitis."

Avoid Makeup

These days a gym visit almost doesn't seem to "count" unless one posts it on Instagram.  This often leads women to wear makeup to the gym. Just don't. Dr. Horn says, "Most makeup will clog pores by not allowing the skin to breathe naturally during workouts. A better option is a tinted moisturizer if you are self-conscious about your skin tone."

SPF

If you're going to be outdoors, apply a light moisturizer with SPF to keep your skin protected from UV rays.  Make sure to choose a lightweight product as not to clog up your pores. Look for words like "non-comedogenic" or "oil-free" to know that your sunblock won't cause acne.

Don't Touch Your Face at the Gym!

Cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, these all breed bacteria. Touching them and them wiping beads of sweat off your face is a sure way to spread bacteria that can create new breakouts. Make sure to bring a towel for this instead of using your hands.

A Flowing Mane of Hair is Not Your Friend During a Workout

When you are working out it is a good idea to keep hair out of your face by styling it into a bun or rocking a dry and clean sweatband. Sweat and dirt can get transferred from your hair onto your face. If you haven't washed your hair and use hairspray or other hair products, these can also splash onto your pores and perspiration. This can cause irritations and breakouts.

How to Choose the Right Gym Towel

An old rag won't be effective at absorbing sweat. However, you don't want a gym towel that is as absorbent as a bath towel you would use to dry off your body after a shower at home. Dr. Horn says, "The gym towel should be a happy medium — absorbent enough to keep your face dry during a workout, but not so thick it clings to bacteria even after a wash."

Wear Loose and Comfortable Gym Clothes

"Spandex is tight clothing that can lead to skin infections from bacteria and fungi," warns Dr. Horn. "Wear loose attire that will also help wick away the sweat preventing it from being absorbed by your skin." Just google "sweat-wicking workout clothes."

Reduce the Redness

Calm down a flushed face with your redness control remedy made up of a little bit of iced green tea and a spray bottle. "You'll cool down your skin and add in a few extra anti-oxidants in the process," says Dr. Horn.

After your workout

Dr. Horn stresses, "Wash your face immediately after your workout. You don't want a mixture of dirt, oil, and bacteria clinging to your skin, affecting its pH, and clogging your pores. If you are exercising in a park where there is no sink, bring cleansing facial wipes with you."

Moisturize Post Workout

No matter your type of skin, after cleansing, you must moisturize. Dr. Horn says that "Skipping this essential step can unknowingly dehydrate your skin causing your oil-producing glands to overcompensate by producing an oversupply of oil. Use a moisturizer that's been produced for your specific skin type and condition immediately after cleansing for the best results."

Skip the Hot Shower

Sure, your muscles are sore, and you're in the mood for a hot shower after a workout. Dr. Horn points out that, "Hot water strips skin of vital oils, leaving you with dry, itchy, dull skin." Exfoliate more often to avoid "Bacne.Breakouts on your back or chest are particularly common for "gym rats." To avoid this, use a gentle body scrub three times a week. Dr. Horn says, "This will keep pores clear and skin functioning well."

Save Your "Superhero" Products for Night

Save serious treatment products for bedtime. Dr. Horn points out, "Even seemingly normal skin can experience much more sensitivity right after a workout.  You may want to wait until redness decreases by bedtime to use your super-active acne or anti-aging treatment products."

Seven Beauty Tips for Women

Seven Beauty Tips for Women

Looking good is important to most women. It can give you a boost of confidence, make you feel more attractive, and even help you get ahead in certain areas of your life. This article will discuss seven beauty tips, from using a lash lift kit to drinking plenty of water—these are tips that every woman should know.

1. Wear Sunscreen Regularly

Wearing sunscreen every day helps to prevent sun damage and keeps your skin looking young and healthy. Sunscreen works by absorbing or reflecting the sun’s UV rays, which can cause premature aging and increase your risk of skin cancer. When choosing a sunscreen, it’s important to look for one that offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. And be sure to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to ensure adequate protection. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, ears, and hands. And don’t forget to reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming.

2. Use a Quality Moisturizer

A good moisturizer is an essential part of any beauty routine. Moisturizers help to keep your skin hydrated, which can prevent dryness, flaking, and fine lines. When choosing a moisturizer, it’s important to select one that’s appropriate for your skin type. If you have oily skin, look for a light, oil-free moisturizer. If you have dry skin, opt for a heavier cream or lotion. And if you have sensitive skin, be sure to choose a hypoallergenic product. Apply your moisturizer after washing, both in the morning and before bed, for the best results.

3. Get Plenty of Sleep

It isn’t called “beauty sleep” for no reason.  Getting enough rest is crucial for maintaining your health and appearance. When you’re well-rested, your skin looks brighter and more radiant. You may also find that you have fewer wrinkles and dark circles under your eyes. So aim to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night, and you’ll be on your way to looking and feeling your best.

4. Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is important for your overall health, and it can also help you look your best. When you’re properly hydrated, your skin looks plumper and more youthful. Drinking plenty of water can also help to prevent dry, flaky skin. And it can even give you a temporary boost in energy levels.

5. Less Is More When It Comes to Makeup

While it’s fun to experiment with different makeup looks, most often, less is more. When you wear too much makeup, it can cake and settle into fine lines and wrinkles. It can also make your pores look larger and cause your skin to break out. So when in doubt, go for a natural look, using your makeup and a lash lift kit to highlight your natural features instead.

6. Eat Healthy Foods

What you eat has a direct impact on your skin, hair, and nails. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein can help to give you a healthy glow. And avoiding processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive alcohol can help to keep your skin looking its best. So be sure to include plenty of nutritious foods in your diet.

7. Exfoliate Your Skin Regularly

Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This can help to improve the appearance of your skin and make it feel softer and smoother. When exfoliating, be sure to use a product that’s appropriate for your skin type. And avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can irritate pores and cause unattractive inflammation.

Conclusion

By following these simple tips, you can keep looking your best. So choose products that are appropriate for your skin type, and don’t be afraid to experiment until you find what works best for you.

Self-Care During Quarantine: 5 Ways to Use Your Beauty Routines to Make Time for You!

Self-Care During Quarantine: 5 Ways to Use Your Beauty Routines to Make Time for You!

Hi Everyone! A few weeks ago, Amy shared some awesome tips to keep our stress levels low while practicing social distancing.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how simple beauty routines have become a form of serious self-care during quarantine. If you’re like me and you’re finding a lot of your routines have been interrupted in a big way right now, I’ve got 5 tips that will hopefully help you feel a little pampered and a lot more in control while we’re all hunkered down.

So, let’s dive in and look at some ways we can stay feeling fabulous even when things are stressful!

1. Self-Care Pro Tip: Take All the Time You Need

What do I mean by this exactly? Well, self-care can look like a lot of things to a lot of different people. For many of us, right now is the time we’re finding we have a lot of unexpected free time on our hands. Why not use some of it to take your time doing daily tasks you normally have to rush through! My favorite way to do this is to take a longer shower.

Try it out! Instead of rushing through washing your hair, try giving yourself a gentle scalp massage for a few minutes. Check out that new deep conditioning treatment or face mask you’ve been wanting to take a crack at! One of my favorites is to take a few extra moments to rub my shoulders and neck under the hot water.

It’s okay to slow down, savor the time you have to do these basic everyday tasks, and really find the joy in them. One way I added some extra self-care and fun to my shower routine was buying a LED shower head and Bluetooth speaker.

Hey, my shower concerts are full blown productions!

And that’s okay. Find the fun and joy in slowing down and take this opportunity to savor moments you wouldn’t get to otherwise.

2. Self-Care Pro Tip: Looking Good for You!

This one came to me unexpectedly, but about a week into sheltering in place I realized how badly I missed putting on makeup! For some people, makeup isn’t their preference (although I have a feeling that if you’re here reading Health and Beauty Girl you might be a huge fan of it like I am).

Even if you have nowhere to go but the living room, try taking some time to get done up. This is a great time to experiment with new makeup. Try a fun look, check out some interesting trends, and do whatever makes you happy.

I make a point every morning of sitting down with my favorite podcasts, drinking my coffee, and doing my makeup. Even though it only takes up a little time out of my day, I spend the rest of the day feeling so much better and my self-esteem goes through the roof.

Makeup is a great form of expression and I definitely recommend taking some time right now to express yourself!

3. Self-Care Pro Tip: Don’t Forget the Basics!

While Instagram can make self-care look aesthetically pleasing, with perfectly laid out bubble baths and amazing flat lay photos of products people are loving, we can’t forget that often self-care is doing what you need on a basic human level. A full face of makeup may not do you much good if you haven’t brushed your teeth and hair today.

One of my favorite self-care moments in the day is brushing my teeth. I know it sounds odd but taking the time to do a full dental routine with a 2-minute brush, floss, mouthwash, and even teeth-whitening makes me feel so much better. The same goes for doing my skincare, combing my hair, and putting on a fresh outfit even if that means yet another pair of sweatpants.

If you’re feeling down and struggling, try even the basics. If a shower is too much, try splashing some water on your face or using a makeup wipe to get your skin at least semi-clean. If a full dental routine is too much, try taking the time to brush your teeth. It sounds simple but when people are really down these little things can make a monumental difference in their outlook on the day. If you’re feeling down, check in with yourself and ask what little beauty routines you can do to feel better.

4. Self-Care Pro Tip: Treat Yourself!

Have a new skincare product you wanted to try that’s normally out of your price range? Had a new beauty item in your cart forever and can’t bring yourself to buy it? Friend, treat yourself!

A lot of the ways people usually treat themselves-- restaurants, shopping, travel-- are all off the table right now. It’s okay if you want to splurge on a product you ordinarily would not.

Not sure what to get? Try shopping with online retailers that let you include samples of products at checkout! This may be one of the easiest ways to discover something new you’ll love. Or! Buy a travel or mini size of a product first to make sure you like it. These are often cheaper and you likely won’t have overspent if it turns out you don’t love that product after all.

5. Self-Care Pro Tip: Stick to a Routine

For me, sticking to a routine means that I do my skincare every morning and every night. A lot of my routines are thrown off right now. My eating schedule, my work schedule, my sleep schedule. It helps to pick an aspect of your beauty routines and make sure you stick to them. Whether this is skincare, makeup, a once a week hair treatment, etc. Find something in your beauty routine and make sure you commit to sticking to that routine whenever possible.

Set it up like a goal for yourself. You’ll feel proud of yourself when you accomplish the small task and help do something to beautify your day at the same time! It’s a win-win.

Now I want to hear from you!

Comment below and tell me what beauty and self-care tips have been your favorites recently!

Healthy is Beautiful, Beautiful is Healthy: The Relationship Between Health and Beauty

Healthy is Beautiful, Beautiful is Healthy: The Relationship Between Health and Beauty

In the current age of social media, it is easy to get caught up in skewed perceptions of our physical self. Societal ideals of beauty focus heavily on vanity, rather than what is truly important, the inner self. Rather than vanity, beauty is found in the things which make us happy and whole. But how does one recognize the importance of maintaining their health in order to change their perception of beauty?

Owning a practice with a focus on both physical and spiritual health, Dr. Paramjit “Romi” Chopra of MIMIT Health encourages patients to recognize their health as important and beautiful. Dr. Chopra combines both holistic and modern health practices, to treat the body as a vessel which needs the utmost quality of care. The meaning of beauty, he believes, is not limited to concepts of vanity, but exists within the person.

Health is one of the most, if not the most, important thing we have in life so without our health, what do we have? Despite the ideals that have been instilled in us for decades from society and pop culture, there are ways to turn correct them and learn that being healthy is the best way to be beautiful. Dr. Chopra has tips on recalibrate the brain to that way of thinking.

Mind and body balance: When a person is able to find a balance between mind, body, spirit and emotion, there is harmony. If those four components fall out of balance, it can lead to negative effects on overall health. Through holistic and modern medicine, it is instilled through self-care and lifestyle how to strike that balance and maintain it. Finding this balance creates a harmony that projects inner and outer beauty

Self-care: Self-care is key to learning that healthy equates to beauty because it allows one to be in tune with what their body is trying to tell them. It is about assessing what stressors and factors might be contributing to the cause of the aliments the body is fighting. If we are able to identify the outside factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, etc., then it is easier to take the steps to change those factors and find a level peace within oneself. When at peace, the inner health radiates out to reflect beauty on the outside.

Lifestyle: Lifestyle is very similar to the act of self-care. While self-care is being aware of what the body is trying to tell us and correcting it, lifestyle is about incorporating self-care into everyday life to establish a continued balance. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle can consist of a number of components ranging from taking a daily prescription to adjusting diet and exercise routines. If there is nothing to release serotonin and endorphins the body will feel stagnant and heavy, which creates a negative outlook of self. With a balanced schedule that includes proper sleep schedules, exercise and eating right, the body will find its balance on the inside, which is exuded outward with clearer skin, better mood, etc.

Know yourself: Everyone is born with different bodies; tall, short, broad, lanky, etc. Being in tune with how your body helps us determine what will make you healthy. Finding not only a balance of diet and exercise that works for an individual body type, finding a balance of doing things on the day to day that makes you happy will help project your inner peace and beauty outwards. If we spend all our time working and not engaging in things that make us happy, the body will not only not be healthy but it won’t feel beautiful as a result. Burning the candle at both ends won’t work easy, balance is key.

Despite the standard of beauty set by society, there are a number of ways to correct that train of thought. Knowing that you are healthy should be the key to feeling beautiful, and being healthy is the key to projecting inner health outwards. Balance of mind, body and soul is one of the best ways to bring inner and outer beauty together in harmony. To be balanced and healthy is the new definition of being beautiful.
