The Best Natural Sleep Aid For Insomnia!

I've struggled with severe insomnia since 2002. I won't get into the reasons why it started but let's just say after a stressful life event triggered it, it just snowballed from there and took on a life of its own. Since then, I have resorted to every gadget, treatment, therapy, and natural product that I can get my hands on, always with the hope that I'll find "the one."

Over the years, I have found many things that work for me and someday I may share a quite extensive list of the ones that helped the most. There is no way I could include everything, just a variety of what has worked for me. My problem is that even though I find many things that help my insomnia, nothing sticks or keeps my sleep deep, long, and restful. For example, products like 5-HTP help with my sleep but if I take it too many days in a row, it starts to make my sleep MORE restless, so I have to keep switching it up and changing what I take to try and help with my sleep. The struggle is real!

Today, I need to share with you an exciting new product discovery for me as it may also help some of you, and I know there are so many people suffering from insomnia these days.

I came across this product by chance, I wasn't even looking for something for my sleep at the time. Well, I was but it was an eye mask as I have to sleep in total darkness. So I stumbled across this product in my search and I've been using it for a few weeks now with excellent results! Not perfect, but it's one of the best things, if not THE best thing that I've found for my sleep in a long time.

The great thing about this supplement is that it's very customizable in terms of how much or how little you take thanks to the spray dispenser. For example, a dose is considered 6 sprays but because I am very sensitive, I can take just one spray and wait and see and then another if I find I need more etc. This also makes it more economical for me.

Mercola Sleep Support

The supplement I'm talking about is by Dr. Mercola, it's called Sleep Support. It does contain a small amount of melatonin which I'm a fan of, but as much as I like melatonin and it does help me sleep at times, it can also have the tendency to make me wake prematurely ie, 3-4am. So, the fact that this has a very small dose of melatonin that is also customizable, allows me to take melatonin without experiencing the negative effects. This supplement has quite a unique blend of ingredients that are effective, and as I've said, very customizable in terms of dosage. It's pleasant to take and has a sweet raspberry flavour. I spray it under my tongue for best absorption and hold it there for a minute or two.

One pre-metered superfine spray dose will increase your feelings of sleepiness, help you fall asleep faster, enhance your overall sleep quality, which in turn improves your morning alertness and reduce daytime fatigue.

Supplement Facts
Serving Size: 6 Sprays (approx. .78 ml)
Servings Per Container: Approx. 32
Amount Per Serving%DV
Niacin (Vitamin B3) (as Nicotinic Acid)1.5 mg8%
Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine)3 mg150%
Dr. Mercola's Special BlendTart Cherry (from prunus cerasus [fruit] concentrate)
Chamomile flower extract
Jujube (from Ziziphus jujuba [seed] extract)
46.1 mg*
Dr. Mercola's Neuro BlendGaba (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid)
Melatonin (1.5 mg)
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan)(from Griffonia simplicifolia [seed] extract)

I've had great results so far and no aggravation or side effects. Although my sleep is far from perfect, this is definitely one of the best things that I've found for my sleep in a long time. I just have to play around with the dose and timing. It's pretty economical, especially if you are like me and take less than the full dose (I usually take between 1-3 sprays). If you suffer from insomnia too, you know that you can't put a price on a good night's sleep. If something works, I wouldn't care how much it costs! But, I am sick and tired of spending a ton of cash on things that don't work!

*Tip: If you wake up prematurely like I do (around. 3-4am), consider taking this product or any melatonin supplement upon awakening as that sometimes puts me back to sleep and may work for you. But, I don't recommend this if it's any later in the morning. Since I started this Sleep Support Supplement by Mercola, I haven't had to do this as I've been going back to sleep on my own!

Update: this morning I actually slept through the night and didn't wake up prematurely for the first time in a long time.

If you or someone you know has insomnia, I urge you to give this a try. And, please let me know how it works for you or your loved one. I'd love to hear your feedback.

I purchased mine from iHerb for about $15USD and had free shipping as I was purchasing other products and qualified for free shipping. They do ship to most countries and shipping is very affordable.

I will definitely be repurchasing this product!

7 Yoga Exercises that Help Accelerate Hair Growth

Losing our hair undoubtedly feels awful and it creates a great havoc on our mind. Due to a sedentary lifestyle, both men and women suffer from hair loss. Especially when it comes to the latter, every woman wishes for long, healthy and shiny hair.

There are a number of reasons that can lead to hair loss, such as age, environmental pollution, poor diet, stress or hormonal unbalance. No doubt, technologies have definitely made our lives easier but everything has its own pros and cons. We look for temporary solutions to combat hair loss, like cosmetic products or hair styling products, without addressing the cause from within.

As beauty comes from the mind and a healthy mind leads to healthy living, It is important to maintain a balance in your life. For this, yoga is your ultimate guide to a strong mind and healthy body. Furthermore, yoga can be exceptionally beneficial for hair growth. The more downward-facing yoga positions you do, the more blood goes to your scalp and follicles, resulting in faster and healthy hair growth.

There are various factors that can lead to hair loss, including but not limited to:
  • Hormonal disorder

Benefits of Sirsasana:

Sirsasana helps rejuvenate and revitalize the brain by directing an enriched supply of oxygenated blood to the brain cells. As a result, scalp cells gets nourished, which leads to hair growth.

How to do:
  • Kneel down with your buttocks resting on the heels of your feet.
  • Lean forward and place your forearms on the floor and interlock the fingers of both of your hands.
  • Place the top of your head flat on the floor while pressing the back of your head against the interlocked arms and lift your heels.
  • Stay still in this position and return to normal position after a few minutes.

5. Ustrasana

Also known as camel pose, Ustrasana directs the blood flow towards the scalp, while also balancing any abnormalities of the thyroid gland that can also lead to hair loss.

Benefits of Ustrasana:
  • It increases the blood circulation to the brain and scalp cells, leading to hair growth
  • It also regulates the thyroxin hormone of the thyroid which can lead to hair loss.
How to do:
  • Sit on your knees while keeping your body straight.
  • Bow your spine backward and touch the heels of your feet.
  • Move your face upwards and retain this position for a few minutes and slowly come back to normal position.

How to do:
  • Simply sit down on a flat surface and bend your legs backward.
  • Try to match your ankles to buttocks and retain this position for a few minutes.

7. Uttanasana

  • It also helps to provide relief from stress and anxiety, which are one of the main causes of hair loss.
How to do:

  • Stretch your hamstrings and abdomen muscles and bend downwards.
If you will do these yoga poses regularly, along with natural remedies for a healthy hair, you will surely be able to combat your hair loss.

Healthy is Beautiful, Beautiful is Healthy: The Relationship Between Health and Beauty

Healthy is Beautiful, Beautiful is Healthy: The Relationship Between Health and Beauty

In the current age of social media, it is easy to get caught up in skewed perceptions of our physical self. Societal ideals of beauty focus heavily on vanity, rather than what is truly important, the inner self. Rather than vanity, beauty is found in the things which make us happy and whole. But how does one recognize the importance of maintaining their health in order to change their perception of beauty?

Owning a practice with a focus on both physical and spiritual health, Dr. Paramjit “Romi” Chopra of MIMIT Health encourages patients to recognize their health as important and beautiful. Dr. Chopra combines both holistic and modern health practices, to treat the body as a vessel which needs the utmost quality of care. The meaning of beauty, he believes, is not limited to concepts of vanity, but exists within the person.

Health is one of the most, if not the most, important thing we have in life so without our health, what do we have? Despite the ideals that have been instilled in us for decades from society and pop culture, there are ways to turn correct them and learn that being healthy is the best way to be beautiful. Dr. Chopra has tips on recalibrate the brain to that way of thinking.

Mind and body balance: When a person is able to find a balance between mind, body, spirit and emotion, there is harmony. If those four components fall out of balance, it can lead to negative effects on overall health. Through holistic and modern medicine, it is instilled through self-care and lifestyle how to strike that balance and maintain it. Finding this balance creates a harmony that projects inner and outer beauty

Self-care: Self-care is key to learning that healthy equates to beauty because it allows one to be in tune with what their body is trying to tell them. It is about assessing what stressors and factors might be contributing to the cause of the aliments the body is fighting. If we are able to identify the outside factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, etc., then it is easier to take the steps to change those factors and find a level peace within oneself. When at peace, the inner health radiates out to reflect beauty on the outside.

Lifestyle: Lifestyle is very similar to the act of self-care. While self-care is being aware of what the body is trying to tell us and correcting it, lifestyle is about incorporating self-care into everyday life to establish a continued balance. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle can consist of a number of components ranging from taking a daily prescription to adjusting diet and exercise routines. If there is nothing to release serotonin and endorphins the body will feel stagnant and heavy, which creates a negative outlook of self. With a balanced schedule that includes proper sleep schedules, exercise and eating right, the body will find its balance on the inside, which is exuded outward with clearer skin, better mood, etc.

Know yourself: Everyone is born with different bodies; tall, short, broad, lanky, etc. Being in tune with how your body helps us determine what will make you healthy. Finding not only a balance of diet and exercise that works for an individual body type, finding a balance of doing things on the day to day that makes you happy will help project your inner peace and beauty outwards. If we spend all our time working and not engaging in things that make us happy, the body will not only not be healthy but it won’t feel beautiful as a result. Burning the candle at both ends won’t work easy, balance is key.

Despite the standard of beauty set by society, there are a number of ways to correct that train of thought. Knowing that you are healthy should be the key to feeling beautiful, and being healthy is the key to projecting inner health outwards. Balance of mind, body and soul is one of the best ways to bring inner and outer beauty together in harmony. To be balanced and healthy is the new definition of being beautiful.

How to: Hacks to Relieve Menstrual Cramps Naturally!

If you're like me and suffer from horrible menstrual cramps every month, I want to share with you something that I wish someone told long ago! It would have saved me decades of unnecessary suffering.

First, let me start by saying that menstrual cramps can have many causes from PCOS (which I have had) to more serious causes,  so you should always check with your doctor and rule out anything serious, and get the okay to take any medications and/or supplements.

After suffering from severe cramps for over a decade, one day, I found out about a natural way to reduce my horrible cramps substantially.  I was with a boyfriend who was seeing a very expensive natural doctor in Yorkville and before we left, he said: "Hey, Doc, any recommendations for monthly cramps for my Girlfriend?" The doctor replied that I should take a calcium/magnesium supplement every day for at least 10 days before the onset of my period. Seemed so simple, and it was!

I picked up some calcium/ magnesium supplements right away and followed the doctor's orders. To my delight, when my period came, the pain was about a 2 out of 10 vs. the usual 8 or 9 out of 10. Keep in mind, you must take the calcium/magnesium for at least 10 full days leading up to your period. If you just take it the day before your period or on the day of, it will not reduce the pain. If you have trouble swallowing pills, a liquid calcium/magnesium supplement will work just as well, if not better due to the better absorption.

Shown are some of my go-to products. I've been using them for years.

Calcium Magnesium Supplement

Liquid Calcium/Magnesium

Also, a heating pad can work wonders! But, we obviously can't always be attached to a heating pad all day. If you can't spend all day on your heating pad, there are also stick on heat patches that were created for back pain that can be used. Just place a patch on your tummy and the heat will penetrate your skin and help reduce the pain. These patches are another great hack for relieving cramps naturally.

Heating Pad
Heat Patches

And, don't forget to make some time to relax as relaxing the muscles is what reduces much of the pain. Sip some hot beverages, too. Preferably chamomile and/or ginger tea as they have anti-inflammatory properties.

A tip worth mentioning is to stay away from caffeine as it can worsen cramps as it's a stimulant and vasoconstrictor, which means that it makes blood vessels constrict and that can also worsen cramping of the uterus.

I wish I had learned these tips sooner as it would have saved me from so much suffering... these hacks really work! This isn't to say that I never take some Ibuprofen. There are times that I forget to take my calcium/magnesium for the 10 days prior and I have to turn to Ibuprofen for relief.

I hope these hacks help you if you also suffer from debilitating cramps. I'd love to hear if these hacks work for you or if you have any other tips and hacks to relieve cramps naturally.

It's something every woman fears: Waking up on the day before or day of a big holiday party with an unsightly skincare emergency. How many women have cancelled an invitation because a cold sore erupted? How about cystic acne on your chin that appears New Year’s Eve? While neither of these are "life threatening" conditions, for a woman, they might as well be. There are solutions. Dr. Manish Shah is a Denver Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. As a father to girls, he can relate to these skincare 911s and shares his expertise on what can be done to mitigate various conditions.

Problem: Cold Sore

Solution: Dr. Shah offers cortisone injections to patients who want to look better faster. "Very diluted cortisone into the cold sore, this can bring the inflammation down quite rapidly," he says. If you are afraid of needles, call your doctor and ask him/her to call in a prescription for Valtrex, Famvir, or Acylovir, Dr. Shah says. You can pick up Abreva, an over-the-counter medication. If you can't make it to the pharmacy, you can try some old-fashioned remedies: Visine will help take the red out. You can also use a cold compress and Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Problem: Allergic Reaction

Solution: The first thing you need to do is stop eating or using whatever is causing the allergic reaction. If the reaction happens a few days before an occasion, Dr. Shah recommends using hydrocortisone cream twice a day and taking Allegra, Claritin or Zyrtec which are longer acting and less sedating than Benadryl. Try a whole-milk compress for 10 minutes twice a day. For allergic reactions, use the hydrocortisone cream and then cover up redness by canceling it out entirely. The opposite of red is green, so apply green tinted concealer on the red area. The combination will create a flesh-toned hue. A good quality tinted moisturizer naturally has green/yellow undertones and also provides moisture to dry skin. "If this type of reaction is something you have never experienced before, go immediately to your dermatologist," says Dr. Shah.

Problem: Cystic Acne Breakout

There are some people who use a lancet or small knife to cut into a cyst and fish out the clogged part of the pore. "Cutting open a cyst is extremely risky. You not only run the risk of getting an infection, but you also run the risk of scarring, as in a permanent skin indentation or protrusion," says Dr. Shah. And what if you cut open a cyst but can't squeeze out the root clog? You don't know where the root is or how deep it resides inside your skin. You can't even be 100% confident that you will be able to completely remove the hardened plug of the cyst. If any remnants of the clog remain, the cyst is likely to get re-inflamed and come back even worse. It's also not exactly good to cut open skin and dig around and squeeze the wound. Doing so will only make a bloody mess, increase the chance of skin scarring, and prolong the time it takes the cyst to heal.

Solution: Here's a secret that many a supermodel or actress use: Steroid shot. Dr. Shah explains that, "when we discuss treating acne with cortisone or "steroid" shots, we are referring to the process of gently placing a very dilute quantity of a "glucocorticoid" steroid into the cyst. Glucocorticoids are a class of steroid molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies and have numerous functions including the regulation of human metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. They have very potent anti-inflammatory effects, so they are often used to treat inflammatory diseases in medicine. They can be formulated as creams to treat skin rashes or as pills to treat systemic disease. They can also be injected directly into local areas of inflammation such as in arthritic joints and inflamed acne cysts. Within one or two days of injection into a cyst, the steroid will shrink the inflammation producing relief of pain and almost immediate cosmetic improvement."

Problem: Puffy Eyes

Solution: The key to reducing the puffiness of puffy eyes is having something cool applied to them. "A cool compress or cooled cucumber slices applied for 5 to 10 minutes can constrict blood and lymph vessels," says Dr. Shah. You can also use cool tea bags, which contain tannins that will help reduce swelling. And since puffy eyes can be caused by a high salt diet or alcohol, try to cut out both before an important occasion.

Problem: Sunburn

Solution: Take a cool bath or shower. Set the water to a cool temperature that's just below lukewarm and relax for 10 to 20 minutes. The temperature will ease the pain, and the water will stop your skin from becoming as irritated. Repeat as often as you need to. Avoid using soap, bath oils, or other detergents as you bathe - they'll irritate your skin and possibly make it even worse. If you have blisters forming on your skin, take a bath instead of showering. The pressure from the shower might pop your blisters. When you get out, don't rub your skin dry with a towel. Instead, let yourself air dry, or pat the towel over your skin in small, gentle movements. Apply cold compresses to your skin. If you're not in a situation where you can bathe, or you'd just prefer not to, you can instead apply cold, wet compresses to your skin. Dampen a washcloth or other piece of fabric with cold water and lay it over the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes. Re-wet it as often as you need to. Apply aloe vera to burned skin. Using the pads of your fingers, gently apply the aloe to your sunburn. Don't "rub it in" all the way, like you might with a regular lotion. Leave it a bit goopy and moist on top of the burn - this helps prevent the skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Reapply as often as necessary. Treat inflammation with cortisone cream (optional). Cortisone creams contain a small dose of steroids that can work to reduce inflammation to your sunburn.

Problem: Too much filler

The Solution: Dr. Shah suggests doing fillers no sooner than 1 month before a big event to allow time for healing and touch ups. One of the reasons Dr. Shah leans toward hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane is because they are easily reversed with Hyaluronidase. This product dissolves and degrades the Restylane, Juvederm or Perlane so as to reverse the results of the initial injection. It's a great insurance policy when choosing a practitioner. Make sure yours has it at his/her disposal. Most patients find the immediate results of soft tissue filler treatments very satisfying. If an undesirable result occurs, your treatment provider should be able to discuss and carry out all of the treatment options. Removing the effects of a "filler" treatment can be difficult. This is why any filler treatment needs to be done carefully, conservatively and only by very experienced and Board -Certified Specialists. Hyaluronic Acid based dermal fillers have the additional benefit of being partially or completely reversed with time or with the injection of a commercially available enzyme known as Hyaluronidase.

I hope you enjoyed these beauty hacks as much as I did and can put some of them to use.
