The Best Way to Manage Health and Weight at Home With Healthkeep!

Amazon stock pics - Healthkeep scale model CS20M3

My partner purchased this HealthKeep Body Weight Scale some time ago. It was sitting in the box for months, so I asked if I could use it and I immediately set it up and couldn't wait to see all my stats!

This Healthkeeep scale is the exact one that my partner's chiropractic uses, so I feel confident about its accuracy and quality despite its super low price tag of SRP $29.99CAD (currently on sale for $22.99).

It was easy to set up which took about 5 minutes after the 2 AAA batteries were installed (batteries were included with the scale).

Once I downloaded the Feelfit app by scanning the QR code on the pamphlet, I turned on Bluetooth and location (used for android only) and was able to see all of my stats within seconds.

The app can sync with Fitbit, Apple Health, Google Fit,and offers App for Apple Watch, Samsung Health.

The scale is made from tempered glass and can weigh up to 396lbs. It is
FDA, CE, FCC, and ROHS certified

The HealthKeep scale will display and store 13 measurements which helps you know what's going on inside your body and you can then take better control of your health.

13 Key Body Composition Analysis:

Healthkeep Body Weight Monitor keeps track with 13 essential measurements:
  1. Body Weight
  2. Body Fat %
  3. BMI
  4. Fat-free Body Weight
  5. Subcutaneous Fat
  6. Visceral Fat
  7. Body Water %
  8. Skeletal Muscle
  9. Muscle Mass
  10. Bone Mass
  11. Protein
  12. BMR
  13. Metabolic Age.

We now have 2 of these scales in 2 different bathrooms and I purchased one for my parents as well.

I've never been one to weigh myself very often, I usually just go by the fit of my clothing. But as I age, I am more concerned with things like bone mass and visceral fat etc.

This scale shows me all of those details plus much more and I'm able to set goals in the app as well.

In the screenshots below, I'll share some of my stats so you can see how it works. Note that you can change the colour scheme in the app.

Using the + feature in the app (shown above) allows you to share your details, compare dates to see changes etc.

The photo above shows all of the information that you'll receive within seconds of stepping on the scale.

You can also compare dates using the + data comparison button and can see any changes that occurred between the 2 dates. This is a very handy tool!

My body fat is shown above. I already knew I had to work on that but now I know where I stand and can watch as it goes up or down.

You can click on any of your stats to see more information including where it falls in a range.

I have shared a few of mine in the following examples and I have highlighted each with circles around them.

I was happy to see my bone mass is above average at this time as that is something I have been wondering and even worried about. *

Visceral fat is very important too as stated above, it is the "fat that is found around the human organs and mainly resides in the abdominal cavity." I was surprised and very happy that mine was good/acceptable.

Now that I have this scale, I know which areas I need to focus on when it comes to my health. I can now adjust my diet and fitness routines to get my body where I want it to be. I don't want to obsess about it, but I like to be informed and also be able to see changes and hopefully progress as I adjust my diet and fitness routine. And besides, I actually find this scale fun!

*Note that the scale is not a substitute for seeing your doctor and I would not rely on the scale alone to keep track of my health. Rather, it is something that I will use in addition to seeing my doctor to help me keep on top of my health.

I'm really happy with this scale! I've already lost a few pounds since I started using the it, as I'm able to adjust how I eat according to whether my weight went up or down when I weigh myself in the morning. The same goes for tracking muscle mass and fat percentages. You can adjust your activity accordingly. The scale shares so much more information about my health than a regular scale. I cannot recommend it enough if you want to take control of your health, too!

Wishing you good health!

Skincare Tips For Gym Rats

SKIN CARE TIPS FOR GYM RATS

https://www.lakeshoreplasticsurgery.com/about/dr-michael-horn/

While exercise has multiple benefits, very often workouts and great looking skin don't go together.  We turned to Dr. Michael Horn, a Board-Certified Chicago plastic surgeon and anti-aging expert, to give tips on how you can get the six-pack and still have glowing, acne free skin.

Sweat Itself Does Not Cause Acne

First, "It is important to know that sweat itself does not cause acne," says Dr. Horn. He explains, "Professional sportsmen are predisposed to accumulating dirt and bacteria in their pores during and after workout periods. If left without proper cleansing this can cause worsening in skin conditions like acne and dermatitis."

Avoid Makeup

These days a gym visit almost doesn't seem to "count" unless one posts it on Instagram.  This often leads women to wear makeup to the gym. Just don't. Dr. Horn says, "Most makeup will clog pores by not allowing the skin to breathe naturally during workouts. A better option is a tinted moisturizer if you are self-conscious about your skin tone."

SPF

If you're going to be outdoors, apply a light moisturizer with SPF to keep your skin protected from UV rays.  Make sure to choose a lightweight product as not to clog up your pores. Look for words like "non-comedogenic" or "oil-free" to know that your sunblock won't cause acne.

Don't Touch Your Face at the Gym!

Cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, these all breed bacteria. Touching them and them wiping beads of sweat off your face is a sure way to spread bacteria that can create new breakouts. Make sure to bring a towel for this instead of using your hands.

A Flowing Mane of Hair is Not Your Friend During a Workout

When you are working out it is a good idea to keep hair out of your face by styling it into a bun or rocking a dry and clean sweatband. Sweat and dirt can get transferred from your hair onto your face. If you haven't washed your hair and use hairspray or other hair products, these can also splash onto your pores and perspiration. This can cause irritations and breakouts.

How to Choose the Right Gym Towel

An old rag won't be effective at absorbing sweat. However, you don't want a gym towel that is as absorbent as a bath towel you would use to dry off your body after a shower at home. Dr. Horn says, "The gym towel should be a happy medium — absorbent enough to keep your face dry during a workout, but not so thick it clings to bacteria even after a wash."

Wear Loose and Comfortable Gym Clothes

"Spandex is tight clothing that can lead to skin infections from bacteria and fungi," warns Dr. Horn. "Wear loose attire that will also help wick away the sweat preventing it from being absorbed by your skin." Just google "sweat-wicking workout clothes."

Reduce the Redness

Calm down a flushed face with your redness control remedy made up of a little bit of iced green tea and a spray bottle. "You'll cool down your skin and add in a few extra anti-oxidants in the process," says Dr. Horn.

After your workout

Dr. Horn stresses, "Wash your face immediately after your workout. You don't want a mixture of dirt, oil, and bacteria clinging to your skin, affecting its pH, and clogging your pores. If you are exercising in a park where there is no sink, bring cleansing facial wipes with you."

Moisturize Post Workout

No matter your type of skin, after cleansing, you must moisturize. Dr. Horn says that "Skipping this essential step can unknowingly dehydrate your skin causing your oil-producing glands to overcompensate by producing an oversupply of oil. Use a moisturizer that's been produced for your specific skin type and condition immediately after cleansing for the best results."

Skip the Hot Shower

Sure, your muscles are sore, and you're in the mood for a hot shower after a workout. Dr. Horn points out that, "Hot water strips skin of vital oils, leaving you with dry, itchy, dull skin." Exfoliate more often to avoid "Bacne.Breakouts on your back or chest are particularly common for "gym rats." To avoid this, use a gentle body scrub three times a week. Dr. Horn says, "This will keep pores clear and skin functioning well."

Save Your "Superhero" Products for Night

Save serious treatment products for bedtime. Dr. Horn points out, "Even seemingly normal skin can experience much more sensitivity right after a workout.  You may want to wait until redness decreases by bedtime to use your super-active acne or anti-aging treatment products."

Grit and Zest Athleisure Wear Review

Athleisure wear is still going strong and if you haven't heard of Grit & Zest, you should definitely check them out if you're into the whole athleisure wear thing. Besides their great styles, the quality is impeccable.

I have to admit that it took me some time to get into the whole athleisure wear thing, but I'm glad that I finally did. It's not only fashionable, but it's also comfortable. One of the things I love the most about this trend is that I have one less excuse to workout when I don't have to change my clothes.

I tested out Grit & Zest's Black Valley Sports Bra and their Black Easy Leggings. I went with my usual medium for the Bra but I chose to size up to a large for the leggings as I want them to be comfortable vs tight. I'd say their clothing is true to size. I could definitely have gone with my normal size medium in the leggings as the large is slightly loose on me. For reference, I'm 5.71/2" and 143lbs.

Black Valley Sports Bra

Back of bra

Shell 90% Polyester 10% Spandex, Mesh 93% Nylon, 7% Spandex

From Grit & Zest:
Built for medium impact routines, our slim-fitting Valley Sports Bras are made of breathable, anti-wicking, fast-drying, and four-way stretching tech fabric. Featuring a contouring neckline, adjustable straps, mesh details in front and back, and removable cup inserts. This is something special we made for those looking for a low-key counterpart to our Glitter Valley Sports Bras.

My take on it:
I love the style of this sports bra. It has a mesh insert in the centre, the perfect amount of padding as well as adjustable straps. I like that the bra has a thick band at the bottom so I don't get any back fat, which is something I always look for in my bras. It fits great, is super comfortable, has great style and is very well made. It even looks cute peeking out of my tank tops.

Black Easy Legging

Black Easy Legging / Retail $45
90% polyester, 10% spandex

From Grit & Zest:
Our Easy Leggings are made of anti-wicking, fast-drying, and four-way stretching tech fabric. Be comfortable and at ease wearing black full length leggings that fight against sweat marks and leave you feeling dry. These leggings are high-waisted with a gusset that will holdup throughout any vigorous workout. Signature side panel style lines sit perfectly flat against your skin. You won’t feel the seams, which reduces irritation and adds a bit of unique design and fashion to your athleisure attire.

My take on it:
These leggings are quite lightweight which makes me feel less hot in them than my other thicker leggings. As I mentioned before, I find them to be true to size. I am normally a medium but ordered the large to be safe but I find them a little loose, so I should have gone with their size chart and ordered the medium. Otherwise, they are super soft and comfortable and they are really well made. I like that they are higher waisted without being TOO high. I find when I get leggings that are super high-waisted, I feel suffocated. I don't feel that way at all with these. I found these to be quite long so if you're a tall girl you're in luck, otherwise, just roll them up. I like this style because it's so versatile and they can be worn with anything. They can take you from lounging around to running errands and to the gym for a full-on workout. Grit and Zest also sell crops and cutouts if that's something that you are looking for.

Workout-ready. Just throw a top over and I'm ready to head out the door or just lounge around.

Look Ma, no back fat!

#nofilter

I find this set to be pretty slimming as I am about 10lbs over my normal weight here thanks to all the ice cream I've been eating this Summer. I may not be some IG fitness model but I sure feel good in this gear! 😊

There are so many more great styles to choose from on Grit & Zest. They are definitely worth checking out. 😍
