EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT PLASTIC SURGERY BUT DIDN’T KNOW WHO TO ASK

With plastic surgery so mainstream the question today isn’t “did she or didn’t she?” but “what did she have done?” Botox, filler, liposuction, facelift, breast implants, are not just limited to celebrities as they once were. There isn’t a body or facial concern that can’t be addressed through some sort of procedure. With more and more plastic surgeons striving to educate people on cost, safety, recovery process, and long-term care; Dr. Stanley Poulos, San Francisco Bay area Board Certified Plastic Surgeon answers some of the most common and pressing cosmetic surgery questions today.

Q: Will liposuctioned fat return?

A: Dr. Poulos explains that, “If the patient gains a small amount of weight after their procedure, say 5 pounds, fat cells throughout the body will get a little bigger. While this slight weight gain can diminish results, the overall improved body shape provided by a liposuction procedure will still be visible as treated body areas have fewer fat cells (and thus experience a lower enlargement rate) compared to surrounding areas.”

Finally, in cases of considerable weight gain (i.e. 10% of their body weight); new fat cells can develop in all areas of the body, including treated areas. However, since new fat cell creation typically occurs in an even manner throughout the body, fat often accumulates less in treated areas compared to untreated areas. Many liposuction patients who gain considerable post-procedure weight tend to still look better than if they did not undergo liposuction.

Q. Will you lose sensation in your breasts or nipples if you get implants?

A: Dr. Poulos says that, “There's a chance, although it’s very unusual to lose feeling in your entire breast. About 5 percent of patients experience numbness in their nipples. This may occur if their nerves are cut or stretched during surgery.”

Q: How close do I need to be to my “ideal weight” in order to have the optimal result from liposuction?

A: Dr. Poulos stresses that, “The key thing to know about liposuction is that it is not intended to be a weight loss tool or method. It is simply to address the parts of the body that are not responding to diet and exercise. That said, the industry standard for liposuction is a candidate who is within at least 30% of their ideal weight and are of average body weight. Other things to consider for an optimal result are skin elasticity and muscle tone.”

Q: How long does a Botox treatment last?

A: According to Dr. Poulos, “One treatment may last 3-4 months, but may not result in a significant improvement of the wrinkles for the long term. One or two years of consistent Botox in the same area will result in long term reversal of some wrinkles and optimize the improvements you may be looking for.”

Dr. Poulos adds, “It is recommended to repeat Botox injections every 4 months for maintenance. As you continue to use Botox, deeper wrinkles will continue to soften as dermal remodeling takes place.”

Q: If a partner squeezes your implants too hard during sex, can they burst or alter shape?

A: Dr. Poulos reassures that, “It's impossible. He'd have to use superhuman force to rupture them. And they won't change shape.”

Q: Are there any non-invasive procedures that can sculpt my body, so I don’t have to get liposuction?

A: Yes! The most well-known non-invasive option is Coolsculpting. With this procedure fat cells are frozen in a way that does not damage other tissues and spot areas of excess fat can be sculpted. Still ,as with lipo one must have reasonable skin elasticity to achieve good results.  Another non -invasive option is the V-shape Accent Prime . This device combines radiofrequency (RF) for skin tightening and ultrasound for fat reduction in one treatment and can achieve significant improvement over time.

Q: How long do the results of a facelift last?

Dr. Poulos says that, “One thing is for certain and that is that the aging process goes on regardless of the technique. Eventually if one wishes to maintain the improvement, touch up procedures will be necessary. An average time might be 7-10 years. Those that address the deeper muscle layers do last longer, but there is more difference (in longevity) between individuals than techniques, and the same is true of time for recovery.”

Q: I lost over 50 pounds and now have excessive loose skin on my stomach, arms and inner thighs. What’s my best option and what’s involved?

A body lift is the most common option when addressing excessive skin after significant weight loss. It’s important to research this procedure and go about it in a way that makes sense given your overall health. Body lift offers a permanent result provided weight is kept the same. The thing to consider with a body lift is a high Body Mass Index and potential for abnormal scarring and fluid buildup. Be sure the surgeon shares all risks and benefits.

Q: Should I get saline or silicone breast implants?
here are two basic types of breast implants: saline and silicone gel.

Dr. Poulos says that, Most women feel that silicone implants feel more like natural breasts which is due to the viscosity of the filler material. Previous concerns about the association of auto immune disease with silicone have been largely disproven and the vast majority of plastic surgeons feel that silicone is a perfectly safe alternative.”

iHerb Haul | Health, Beauty, Supplements (Hormones, Stress, Sleep)

I have a little iHerb haul to share today. Most of these items are repurchases for me. I'll share links to products in the headings and a little about them and/or why I take them or how they help me. I Hope you'll find the info helpful.

Supplements:
Brain, Heart, Hormone, Stress, Skin and Hair Health

Jarrow Max DHA 600 mg
I've been taking this fish oil for years. I've tried others but I always go back to this one. It has 600 mg of DHA per serving! I take it for many reasons from heart, brain, and skin and nail health. I've never had fishy burps from this product. I only take one per day just to make it even more affordable and also because I take so many other supplements. This product is dairy-free and gluten-free.

From iHerb:
DHA is the predominant fatty acid in the brain, nervous system and retina of humans. DHA is important for fetal and infantile neurological development. DHA also supports neurological function in seniors.

I stopped taking evening primrose oil for a while and decided I needed to start taking it again. It's supposed to help with hormone balance and also increase progesterone. Since I cannot tolerate even bio-identical progesterone, I look to supplements like this as well as vitex (which I am not currently taking but will probably go back to). As a bonus, evening primrose oil is also fabulous for skin and hair health! I like this dosage as it was recommended in a book I read a long time ago (I can't remember which book it was). I remember reading that our bodies will only be able to process 500 mg's at a time, so it's best to take 500 mg 2 x a day. I tend to only take one a day because I take many other supplements. This product is soy-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free.

From iHerb:
NOW Evening Primrose Oil has naturally occurring Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), an Omega-6 fatty acid also found in Borage and Black Currant seed oils. Although the body can synthesize GLA from other dietary fats, it can be more efficiently utilized for bodily functions when consumed in its preformed state. By supporting the body's healthy immune system responses, GLA may help to maintain normal skin barrier function, as well as a healthy vascular system. It may also be used as a nutritional support for mild discomfort associated with PMS.

I purchased this product years ago based on its claims to help with sleep. I didn't notice anything so I didn't bother to keep taking it regularly. Fast forward to recently, and I decided to give it a try again, as our bodies changed and I thought maybe it would help me this time. I haven't noticed a marked difference in my sleep but what I did notice after taking it daily for a while was that I felt more relaxed and less stressed during the daytime. I take 1 tsp in a bottle of water and sip on it throughout the day. The results are very subtle and happen over time, at least for me. It's not like I drink it and then feel relaxed after like a herbal tea might. Its actions are subtle but effective. I will continue to take this. My Dr. informed me that what my body doesn't use will be eliminated in my urine, so I feel safe taking the larger doses. This product is also gluten-free, soy-free, and free of milk.

From iHerb:
Glycine is the smallest and simplest amino acid, making it versatile for use in a wide range of functions. Glycine is necessary for the production of glutathione, DNA, creatine, bile, hemoglobin, and most proteins. It also helps to promote glycogen storage, thereby making glucose readily available for energy production. Glycine also functions as a calming neurotransmitter in the brain, where it facilitates nerve impulses and is important for the maintenance of healthy sleep patterns.

Beauty

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge with Travel Case 2 pc
I have purchased many Real Techniques products from iHerb as it's usually much cheaper than buying it at my local store. I was so happy to see that they carried this new product that contains their Miracle Complexion Sponge with their new travel case! Such a neat idea, even for use at home to keep my sponge protected from germs and dirt. The travel case is vented so the sponge can get some air and dry out properly.

Cococare Cocoa Butter Cream 1 oz
I added this product to get my order to approx $50 dollars so I could get free shipping! It's a nice size for my purse and will surely help out my dry, dehydrated hands during the cold months to come.

I always check my cart on iHerb and make sure that I'm getting the most bang for my buck. For example, if you're shopping on iHerb, keep checking the cost of shipping as you add and remove products, you'll see that the price will fluctuate and I can usually get free shipping on my orders. Being in Canada, I usually opt to prepay duties and taxes as it eliminates the "handling fee" that Customs will impose if they decide to charge you for taxes etc. Also, check for samples and trial sizes if you need to get to that free shipping threshold.

I hope you enjoyed seeing what I purchased this month and found some of the info helpful.

If you plan on shopping with iHerb, you can save 5% OFF your entire order with discount code AGU725 or just use this link. This code can be used by anyone, unlimited times and it doesn't expire so you can share it with your friends and family as well. The discount code is good for new and existing customers. (This is a referral link).

iHerb's shipping is super cheap and super fast!

Remember to always check with your Doctor or healthcare practitioner before adding any supplements to your routine.

Makeup Declutter | Eyeshadows + Lipsticks!

Searching for dupes of my favourite expired products

After reading an article called "What Happens to Your Face When You Use Expired Makeup" the other day (linked here), it freaked me out a bit. It definitely opened my eyes and I'm SO ready to let go of my old makeup now!

Although I had always been cognisant about tossing cream products and mascaras when they expired, I never paid much attention to powder ones. I adopted the policy that if a powder product changed in consistency or scent, I would toss it.

We cannot always see what may be lurking in our products, especially powder ones, they often don't show signs like cream products can, but they too can be full of bacteria that we do not see. I have bumps on parts of my face (not acne), that look like milia or maybe it's from using such old products that possibly contain bacteria and such that I cannot see. We have to be especially careful with eye products though, as we definitey don't need to get an eye infection!

Decluttering makeup that I love is never easy, but after reading that article and opening my eyes up to how old some of my favourite products actually are, this task became easier. This declutter wasn't about whether or not I liked a product, it was about how old they were and it became a necessity to discard them.

I've had been hanging onto some of my makeup like its life or death! The truth is that some of these products are up to 10 years old, if not more!

In this post, I'm just tackling my eyeshadows and lipsticks. Let's see what I got rid of, but first I'm sharing a chart that has some general guidelines of eyeshadow and other makeup expiration timelines. There are many different opinions on makeup expiry dates, a quick google and you'll see, so I take this chart with a grain of salt. For example, I cannot imagine tossing eyeshadow every 6-12 months and I noticed that my Essence eyeliners have a 36 month expiry. So make sure to check your products for the little expiry icon that indicates the expiry from the date of opening the product.

Source: Google

ONTO THE DECLUTTER....

Small Palettes (one single slipped in here :)
  • Annabelle Nympheas- This was so eye-brightening. I will miss it. Didn't find a dupe. I would repurchase but I don't believe it's available anymore.
  • Sally Beauty eyeshadow single- An okay basic satin shadow. I purchased this one to keep in my purse. Probably would not repurchase.
  • Aloette -(I think)- this is so old there is no writing on the package. It was my absolute favourite. I loved it so much that I didn't want to use it very often... so silly and such a waste! It's so old, that I have no idea when I got it (probably 2008 or earlier)! I would repurchase but don't think it's available.
  • Brian Bailey Foundation duo in Medium -this is a face powder that made the nicest eyeshadow. Discontinued.
  • Wet N Wild Vanity Palette -This was an infamous palette. Luckily, I have a lot of these shades in other palettes. Discontinued.

Single Eyeshadows:
  • 13 eyeshadows (Mixed variety: Mac, Stila, Quo, Nyx, Pixi, Elf)
  • 2 Jordana blushes
All of the above were pulled from my Z palette. I don't even want to think about the total value of all of these singles! I should have included the Sally Girl eyeshadow single in this category but it was not in my Z palette.

Large Eyeshadow Palettes:
  • Quo Back to Basics (UD Naked Dupe)- I would absolutely repurchase this if I could!
  • Pacifica Natural Minerals- I would repurchase if I was looking for some all natural eyeshadows and I didn't have such a large collection.

Front of Quo's Back to Basics LE palette

This Back to Basics eyeshadow palette by Quo was very difficult to part with of because it has all of the shades that I love for my everyday eye look. Granted, I did only use the first 6 shades in the palette (the lighter ones). This palette was supposed to be a dupe for Urban Decay's Naked 1 which is also discontinued now.

Change in texture = product turned. Best not to continue to use it.

I received the above Pacifica palette in 2016, so it's not very old but the texture has changed which is a sign that it's gone bad. I wouldn't have decluttered this palette if it wasn't for signs that it has gone bad.

I used different criteria for purging my lipsticks. Anything 3 years or older had to go. And, I know, lipsticks probably expire long before 3 years but I do sanitize my products and rotate them since I own quite a few.

All of the lip products that were decluttered here are ones that I would purchase again.

Lipstick Declutter:

I know that these aren't part of either of the makeup categories featured in this declutter, but I came across them right after tossing the other items and decided to add them to this declutter. These Essence concealers have a 6-month expiry on the packaging and I've had them for about 3 years. I rarely used them as I prefer my LA Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealers, which have an 18-month expiry stamped on them.

Total decluttered:
  • 14 eyeshadow singles
  • 6 eyeshadow palettes
  • 2 blushes
  • 6 lip products
  • 2 concealers
A grand total of 30 items decluttered!

I am now labelling all of my products so I know exactly how old they are. I just used some address labels and cut to size.

This was definitely eye-opening in terms of paying more attention to my products and their lifespan, and also in terms of the horrible amount of unnecessary waste of money and products! This is one reason that I lean towards purchasing less expensive products; since they do have a lifespan and there is no way I can use up all of my makeup because I'm constantly trying out new products.

I hope you found this post helpful or maybe it inspired you to let go of old, expired products, too.

If I Could Only Have One | Current Favourite Nail Polish!

I'm revisiting my "If I Could Only Have One" series today. I just have to share my current favourite nail polish with you guys!. If I had to get rid of all of my nail polish and only keep one, this would be it! Easy decision for this category, atm. Although we are in the middle of Fall right now, this isn't a "Fall" colour. I find it a year-round colour, at least for me it is. I go to this colour so often. It's not only a neutral shade and a nude shade (has a cool undertone though), but it goes with everything, and it is also so beautiful. It's Essie's Go Go Geisha #312! I would describe it as a muted-pale-mauve-pink.

I have many pale pinks and nudes, but this colour is different from all my others. The tone is unusual but so beautiful!

Accent nail colour: Essence My Sparkling Darling #86

Go Go Geisha gives your nails that clean look without having to go for a typical colour like white or off-white. This shade also makes my pale skin look like I have a tan! At least in person, it does. lol

Note: It takes 2 coats to become opaque and streak-free.

More often than not, I like to have an accent nail. In these photos, I am wearing Essence nail colour in My Sparkling Darling, a rosy glitter. Maybe not appropriate for some workplaces but Go Go Geisha on its own certainly would be.

I don't have the best nails nor am I good at painting them. The camera also doesn't show the colour in all its glory and I have not used any filters in the photos but hopefully, you can see a bit of its beauty and try it out for yourself and see. If you like nudes and want something a little bit different, you will love Go Go Geisha!

What's is your current favourite nail polish? Let me know in the comments! xo

Making Time For a Little Pampering Session Even When You're Tired or Busy!

I used to give myself a facial or at least do a mask once a week. But, lately, I've been really slacking on my skincare game. I still slap on my serums and moisturizers in the morning and evening but had completely stopped with the masks and a little pampering session for my skin (and hair), and I actually really miss it!

I just realized yesterday how slack and lazy I had become in showing my skin a little extra TLC, so I decided it was time to make the time to show my skin that extra bit of love. I hope to keep it up and get back to doing it weekly like I used to.

I do change up the way I go about my weekly "masking" routine. It really depends on what I feel my skin needs. But, in general, I usually like to start with an exfoliator and follow up with a mask or two or three... The great thing is, you can customize your facials and masking routines to be as short or as long as you want. Sheet masks have also made things so much easier and more convenient for us, so I really have no excuse! When I have some extra time, I love to steam my face with my Kinga facial steamer as it really does benefit my skin and clear my pores. Another thing I like to do is to use a deep cleansing mask, followed up by a deeply hydrating mask, then seal it all in with serums etc.

Yesterday's facial:

  • Yesterday, I kept it fairly simple and started with a cleanser followed by Dr Brandt's Pore Dermabrasion Pore Perfecting Exfoliator. It's a physical and chemical exfoliator and contains salicylic acid. In general, I prefer chemical exfoliators but I do like to use a physical one on occasion. I like the Dr Brant one as it has the best of both worlds. Starting out by exfoliating your skin allows all of the other skincare that follows to penetrate more effectively.
  • Next, I followed up with Lumiere De Vie Moisture Intense Sheet Mask. I went for a sheet mask as they take less work than a jarred mask, so I tend to reach for sheet masks when I'm hurried, or very tired and lazy as I was yesterday. I rested with the mask on for 25 minutes, the maximum recommended time. I've used this mask before and loved the results. It really helps me look more refreshed, especially when I'm sleep deprived and looking tired. It's also super hydrating which my dehydrated skin loves!
  • While I was resting with my sheet mask on, I used that time to pamper my hair as well. I threw on my Olaplex 3 and let it sit for 90 minutes while I watched some TV (which I would have done anyway). You can even just use the Olaplex mask for 10 minutes which is the time recommended on the bottle. The Olaplex really helps my damaged/bleached hair look and feels better after I use it. I always use it before I'm going to have any chemical service done to my hair. I'm planning on "bumping my base" aka. lightening my base colour slightly, which I always do at home in between highlights. If you want to know how I do this, you can check out my post that explains how I go about it.
  • After removing my sheet mask, I applied The Body Shop's Vitamin E Aqua Boost Essence Lotion. I almost always use this after I exfoliate or use a face mask. It's very lightweight yet hydrating and it doesn't make me breakout like most vitamin E products can.
  • Lastly, I applied all of my regular skincare, including a serum, moisturizer, eye cream, and sometimes an oil as well. I often mix a couple of drops of oil into my moisturizer and apply it that way.. seems like one less step.

My hair and skin were both thanking me after this little pampering session! This just goes to show that you don't have to take a large chunk of time to treat your hair and/or skin to a little TLC. This is something that I have to remind myself of as I am almost always too tired to be bothered, so I had let go of doing these little things for myself.

If this sounds like a lot for you, you can always just throw on a sheet mask and call it a day/night.

ps. The little gadget shown is the NuFace Mini. It's something I try to use for 5 minutes a day after cleansing my skin in the morning. It definitely is making a difference so far, although it's subtle. I hope to see even more results with continued use.

I hope you find some time to treat yourself to a little or big pampering session, too!

If you have any favourite masks that are good for congested and dehydrated skin, please share in the comments below.
